What is Gastric Bypass?

With the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, weight loss is induced by the formation of a small gastric pouch that restricts food intake and by mild malabsoprtion secondary to bypass of a portion of the small intestines.  The gastric bypass procedure induces a greater than 65% excess weight loss and a greater than 40% loss of total body weight that is sustained long-term.  The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass operation is performed using the open or laparoscopic approach.

Is Gastric Bypass an Option for Me?

Like many who are interested in weight loss surgery, you are probably well aware of the successes people are having with gastric bypass and LAP-BAND® surgery. However, before determining which procedure is appropriate for you, you need to first qualify medically, which is accomplished in part through a medical evaluation. The evaluation will help determine if you are healthy enough for either. While only a physician or surgeon can give you a complete medical evaluation, the criteria listed here should help you get started. In addition, Dr. Wilson can provide more details regarding your specific condition during a private consultation.

  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is at least 40, or 
  • Your BMI is 35 or higher with one or more obesity-related health conditions. 
  • You are at least 100 lbs overweight. 
  • You are at least 18 years old. 
  • Your serious weight loss attempts have had only short-term success. 
  • You are prepared to make major changes in your eating habits and lifestyle. 
  • You do not drink alcohol in excess. 
  • You are not currently pregnant.
